I'm baaaack!

Hey there family and friends,

I considered using a different blog venue, but then thought...why?  All my previous posts are here. I can't guarantee I'll use it often, but I'll try to send updates from time to time.

I arrived in Monrovia, Liberia yesterday (Friday the 13th) on Feb 13 and have had a great night's rest. I'll start my new position at UNDP on Monday and I'm excited. The hotel they have me in is across the street from the beach and it's a beautiful sunny day today.

For now, I'm just settling in and hoping to get caught up with everything that is going on. I do think I'll get to meet a colleague that I worked with in DC who started as Country Director for Mercy Corps in December, which I'm pretty excited about.

This week, I have a whole bunch of stuff to get done, like finding an apartment, getting a UN email and business cards, figuring out how to get my salary, health insurance, etc. We'll also be doing another round of payments to Ebola response workers this month, so I'll be working with my colleagues at the UN and Government of Liberia partners to attend the payment events. I'm hoping to travel to a county I haven't been to before.

Then the first week in March, I'm headed to Dakar, Senegal for a workshop, which will be very exciting because that is a new country for me (#53, I think?). Hope I can remember enough French to get around for a couple of days. :)

I'll keep you updated when there is something more exciting to report.

Jill
